Meet your Doula!

When it comes to helping expecting mothers and families, or taking care of infants, I can honestly say that I have a strong love and passion for this. Children are a gift from God, and such a gift should be enjoyed throughout the whole journey - I wish for every mother to be able to have a great experience.

I’m sad to say this is not always the case.

A few years prior to me starting my doula journey, I came across a multitude of social media posts from women speaking on bad experiences they may have had, or even fears that they feel towards the whole birthing process. I’ve heard/read stories of moms feeling alone, feeling like they had no choice or say so in their labor and delivery. I’ve had moms become surprised when I mention the different options they may have. I can recall one of my earlier clients stating that she felt more empowered and knew that ‘she could do this.’ and that’s what I want for every mom that I’m blessed to be able to work with.

Sometimes that may look like me allowing a mom to eat, bathe, getting a nap in while I tend to baby and assist with a few light household chores, or simply just keeping mom company. That may also look like me helping a family to work together before and during labor to bring baby home and understand what’s going on. It could be a hand to hold during the pain of pushing, working out a partner support plan together, or creating lists and sending pregnancy reminders.

I hope that the same way I was able to provide comfort for any past families is the same way I’ll be able to provide comfort for you. To the family reading this - I hope I get the chance to work with you.

Talk soon!

Grey.

As someone who is looking for a Doula they can mesh with, I bet you’re wondering

What exactly is it like working with me?

A very understandable question.

My Philosophy

Comfortability is key.

And I mean that in a sense that I aim to help my client feel as relaxed and safe as I possibly can. Don’t misunderstand me — there are limitations to the things that I can do, however I realize that sometimes just being there for somebody or simply just lending an ear goes a long way.

In order to explain how I like to work, I need to reference Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. It’s a pyramid depicted graph that showcases the different needs a human may have. It suggests that once the lower level needs are fulfilled, a human may feel accomplished enough to be able to take on more tasks. From bottom to top, the list includes: physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem needs, and self actualization. It’s believed that that is where one reaches their full potential.

Here’s the thing:

I know it’s been said many times before, but I really do believe that it takes a village.

That being said — it is hard work bringing in another life!

It is also hard work learning how to learn another individual.

It’s also quite uncomfortable.

And do you know what happens when you become uncomfortable? You begin to put things off, lack self care, and tense up. Often times, being uncomfortable is just — what I like to call — the base line emotion; meaning it can amplify any other pain/ emotion you may feel.

It can cause anxiety which will cause you to be overwhelmed. If you’re overwhelmed, you’re going to want to avoid attempting/ practicing different labor and delivery comfort methods, repeatedly trying to get that nice deep latch for breastfeeding despite the first few painful encounters, taking care of yourself or your environment, or getting to know your baby so that you may learn how to maneuver with them.

The link below will take you to another website.

During pregnancy, during labor, after labor, and during postpartum, and even after postpartum — one might find themselves feeling unlike themselves. Your clothes won’t fit, your body aches, you’re tired all the time, your hormones all over the place — everything can begin to feel chaotic. Wouldn’t it be nice to have extra support when you’re feeling these things?

Someone to watch baby while you finally take a shower and have a nap.

Someone to remind you of things you’ll need to properly prepare for labor and delivery.

Someone to have around and talk to while your partner is at work, and your family is elsewhere.

Someone to help you feel heard and seen while your working to bring your baby out of your womb, perhaps?

My point is, as a Doula, I aim to just be there for my client.

Therefore, I hold comfortability and practice to a high regard.

When it concerns babies, especially your own, it is important to note that things take time. The more you practice doing things, the better you’ll get. You may have a goal you’re hoping for when it comes to your birth, or even a regular day during your postpartum time. For me, I like to check in every often, just to make sure you’re doing okay, and send helpful tips for labor and delivery. By having someone there who can support you, you can in return feel some relief and be able to take care of yourself and reach self actualization. You’ll finally be able to focus.

Let’s work together so that not only may you feel empowered enough to keep going, but that you may also enjoy this memorable experience. These are vulnerable moments, people. Not only do I want my clients to feel comfortable with the services, I want them to feel secured with me as well and vice versa. It’ll be a memory regardless, so let’s try to make it happy one.

We’re a team.

My goal is not to replace anybody or shut anyone out.

I plan my help out based on what I see and what I am told. Ultimately, I know you may be more comfortable with your family members doing things, so unless you tell me you would prefer for me to do everything, helping you to work together is a one priority goal of mine. I can be hands on, or just direct and let them be hands on.

It’s all up to you.

  • I could not be more thankful for Grey. She really helped me prepare for my labor. Even though my birth did not go exactly as plan because my baby obstructed my cervix and that caused me to get induced (she knew I was against being induced) and the medication Pitocin is so horrible)) but she assisted me and husband to get through 45 hours of my labor. I was so exhausted because of the Pitocin being increased every two hours, that it made labor uneasy because the contractions were coming every minute to where you are unable to rest. I ended up getting an epidural, but she helped my husband with different positions and comforting measures. I will most definitely refer her to anyone, prices are affordable and she also accepts Humana Medicaid and that pays for doula and postpartum visits which is a big help.

  • I’m so grateful for the support I received from Doula Grey during my pregnancy. She was always kind, understanding, and available whenever I needed guidance or reassurance. Even though she isn’t able to be at my labor, the encouragement and knowledge she shared has really helped me feel more confident and prepared. I’d definitely recommend her to anyone looking for a supportive doula.

  • Grey is amazing, she was always attentive and always very willing to be of help to anything that I asked her. She provided so much resourceful information that I can look back and really appreciate. She was my first experience with a doula and it was a great one!

  • Grey is super friendly and helpful. She stepped in when I really needed the help. She was very patient with my baby and a great communicator for me too. She also went out of her way to give me extra help because I am a first time mom and don't really know much

  • “I am very grateful for my newborn son Nicolas’s doula, Grey, who has shown 100% integrity during her service. On the first day, she arrived 15 minutes early to meet my baby and get ready to help. She bathed my baby, changed his diapers, fed him, changed his clothes, washed his clothes, and cleaned his bottles and breast pump. She provided amazing emotional support and was very sensitive to my needs.”
